Q: How would you describe your style?

A mix of urban hip-hop side street prep, with a dash of hipster.

Q: How has growing up in New York City influenced the way you view fashion and your own personal style?

It’s influenced me a lot. I’d say most of my fashion comes from people I see on the streets in New York City and I combine their clothing. I see a person with shoes that I like, like some oxfords, but their shirt and pants doesn’t go. Then I see a girl with a dress that would go with the oxfords and I’m like that would go together! That’s how I come up with different styles. I think also being a 90s baby gave me a lot of insight on style. It was a time of pure color and experimentation from jumpers to weird swooshy jackets and Nike and Tommy Hilfiger trying to make primary colors look cool. New York has definitely influenced my fashion.

Q: Where do you get your inspiration?

Music. I’m going to be honest, I always listen to Common. His music speaks to me. Depending on what he’s talking about in his lyrics I’ll dress to that type of mood. Lauryn Hill. Adele. John Legend. Phil Adé. When I wake up first thing in the morning I listen to music and that’s what dictates my mood—if I’m listening to ghetto dreams gangster I’m going to dress like that.

Q: What is your favorite piece of clothing that you own?

This is a really hard question but I’d have to say my men’s large sized Ralph Lauren blue and white pin striped button down. At any point in time in the winter you can see me wearing it with a Carleton sweatshirt over it or a Bulldog sweater. That shirt will forever be in my wardrobe. I don’t care if termites come and get it—I would patch it up.

Q: What would someone rarely or never find you wearing?

A bunch of neon colors together. What the fuck are you on? Some people can make it look good but highlighter purple, orange, green and yellow would not be in the same outfit on me. Just wouldn’t happen. I could pick two of those colors and pair it up with a little bit of black. But for all of those little neon highlighters that walk around here—it’s not fun anymore. Stop it!

Q: If you could live in any decade for fashion, which would it be and why?

I think I would go with the pencil skirt 50s. I like the flowered and lacey tops. The pin stripes and pencil skirts and the weird platform shoes. I’m into that, I don’t know how much I can pull it off but I can definitely do that.

Q: Where are some of your favorite places to shop?

This is so cliché but the first is urban outfitters. Then thrift shops, maybe forever 21, key word maybe. American eagle. Anthropology. Brooklyn industries, I like that store a lot. Oh, and Charlotte Russe, I just bought a jacket from there. I really like the jacket.

Q: What are you wearing right now?

This is a Forever 21 scarf and a Converse baby blue button up. These are Hollister dark blue denim wash jeans and brown and gold sandals. My earrings are off the street from one of those weird flea markets. One of them is banged up a lot, it looks like a weird continent--but its not! It’s just banged up. I think they have character.

Q: Do you have any advice for the less fashionable Carls?

Dress how you feel. That’s how I do. I do it. Big shot.
